TOP R&B PRODUCERS OF THE '80S (updated 2010 02 01)

R&B record producers often represent a musical force that is significant in the success story of many celebrated black artists. Their productions change the face of R&B music. On these pages the author gathered some of the 1980s hottest producers and songwriters of the American black recording industry along with their musical achievements in Soul, Funk, Boogie and Disco music during the exciting young '80s and beyond…

In the '80s Soul and Funk got smoother and less live and acoustic than in previous decades. The orchestral Philly sound was fading away and large funkbands restructured into smaller economical entities. Music became more keyboards-minded and soon turned high-tech as it gradually evolved into sophisticated Urban Contemporary towards 1983. Many artists who had dominated the previous twenty years struggled to find a place in this new chapter. Their place was taken by a slew of fresh stars bringing fine tunes with the help of a new generation of record producers and composers.
The early '80s is one of the most overlooked and prolific eras of R&B music and reflected a very refreshing time. Musicality was on the rise again after the monotonous reign of the Disco queens. At the end of the '70s, Disco's pulsating four-on-the-floor beat was wearing thin and R&B music was finding its way to the next rhythm. The music industry was no more focused on the massive exploitation of Disco but shifted towards the new profits of mainstream Pop culture. It seemed to be a period when audiences, as well as radio DJs, were wide open to receiving all kinds of music. As a reaction to the Disco over-saturation people were looking for alternatives and this musical climate was perfect to explore new styles of dance music. This new situation implied a welcome deathblow for the brainless sort of Disco. At the same time it was a blessing for true R&B dance music that was refueling musical energy and regaining credibility after the Disco craze.

Commercial success for many Disco-related artists indeed rapidly declined in the '80s. The dance music industry was in turmoil by that time. Sales were disappointing and record labels announced cutbacks in the number of dance records they would release. The problem started with the major record companies that were late getting into the Disco scene. When they woke up, they released loads of Disco records and flooded the market which soon led to the so called "Death of Disco". But of course there were still buyers and radio stations playing many of the Disco songs. There exists a misconception that "credible" Disco music wasn't being made and released during the early '80s. Apparently only the silly Disco emanations had reached their expiration date. In fact, after the Disco overkill of the late seventies, this type of music was still popular during the year 1980 and even to a limited extent until the summer of 1982. If Disco was dead, why then did R&B acts as George Benson, Earth Wind & Fire, The Brothers Johnson, Diana Ross, The Whispers, Kool & The Gang or Stephanie Mills score some of their biggest "Disco" hits in 1980 and 1981? Soulmusic aiming for the dancefloor got rid of the choking Disco trauma and was given the opportunity to excite again! Disco wasn't really dead, it was in a continuous evolution, as was music technology and music culture.
A different type of songs and productions shifted the sound genre towards black R&B/Soul music. This renaissance mainly occured in the thriving and hip underground clubscene where black dance music evolved into what we call Boogie today, electronic dance music marked out by its soulfulness and integrity. The early '80s was actually an exciting period in dance music history, where all the seeds of now flourishing contemporary forms of Hip-Hop, R&B and Dance music were really planted in the form of technology. The Boogie dance tunes, with their super-catchy layers of vocals and synths on top of machine-driven beats, totally redefined how dance music would sound into the next decades. The Boogie phenomenon can largely be summed up by the output of the larger New York Disco labels like Prelude, Vanguard, SAM, West End, Salsoul and Radar in the early '80s. It took a long-time for Boogie to surface from the underground. It had been largely ignored or regarded as Disco's poor cousin, perhaps too slow, too electronic, too R&B…too black even. But it kick-started a musical groundswell which would see club music topping the charts all over the world again, just like Disco had.
The post-Disco era represented by Boogie was a turbulent and creative time for independent dance music in general and one where the early trends in music technology are easy to spot. It was still a continuation of Disco, though dressed up differently. Its rhythms weren't always the ubiquitous four-to-the-floor. Boogie was all about the groove: tempo down or up, the rhythm had to groove. It was a heady blend of Disco, Funk, Jazz, Soul/R&B and Electro, fused by and for the party-heads of the day.
Boogie also introduced the creative and brilliant mixing techniques of legendary DJs/mixers/producers like John Morales, Shep Pettibone, Larry Levan, Jim Burgess, Nick Martinelli & David Todd and François Kevorkian: alchemists who turned even basic tracks into complex sonic masterpieces which can still turn heads now. Obviously the Boogie beat didn't remain the fresh vibe of the underground scene only. Also the major record companies adopted the slick, crisp and synthy club sound for their R&B artists and engaged the services of a new batch of popular producers and mixers.

Throughout the early '80s, Disco music would not only reincarnate into Boogie but also into other forms of dance music like Dance, Rap and even New-Wave and Pop. The term "Disco" was banned but the phenomenon and its energy remained alive and kickin'!
Bit by bit as the '80s era progressed, R&B (dance) music entered the field of Urban Contemporary music: technically advanced and sparkling USA-Soul/Funk fabricated by very sollicitated producers and production companies as Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis' Flyte Tyme Productions on Tabu records (S.O.S. Band, Alexander O'Neal), Vincent Calloway & Reggie Calloway (Midnight Star, Teddy Pendergrass), Kashif's New Music Group Productions (Melba Moore, Stacy Lattisaw), Paul Lawrence Jones' Stone Jones Productions (Lillo Thomas, Freddie Jackson), Lonnie Simmons on his Total Experience label (Gap Band, Yarbrough & Peoples), Keith Diamond (Billy Ocean, Melba Moore), Dennis Lambert (Commodores, Natalie Cole), Barry Eastmond (Freddie Jackson, Jonathan Butler), Leon F. Sylvers III and his Silverspoon Productions (Rockie Robbins, Glenn Jones), Nile Rodgers (Madonna, Al Jarreau), Richard Perry on his Planet label (Pointer Sisters, Greg Phillinganes), Nick Martinelli's Watch Out Productions (Loose Ends, Phyllis Hyman) and The System's Science Lab Productions (Jeff Lorber, Pauli Carman). Also important in the '80s was Hush/Orpheus Productions, the innovative company of the brothers Beau and Charles Huggins that was highly successful through collaborations with an impressive array of top producers (Kashif, Howard King, Keith Diamond, Barry Eastmond, Rahni Song, Paul Laurence, Morrie Brown, Gene McFadden, John Whitehead, Amir Bayyan) and elite artists (Lillo Thomas, Freddie Jackson, John White, Ray Goodman & Brown, Meli'sa Morgan, The Controllers, Melba Moore, Beau Williams, Eric Gable, Najee, Alex Bugnon, Vaneese, Scott White, Willie Collins, Chad). Especially in the second half of the '80s Hush/Orpheus Productions was largely responsible for adding the classy Soul vibe back into R&B music.
On the threshold of the '90s, R&B music welcomed a new musicstyle called New Jack Swing that introduced new artists and producers. Simultaneously the importance of Rap music and Hip Hop culture firmly increased and ultimately gained worldwide recognition, achieving the status of a vital part of today's R&B music.

Technology in the '80s played a bigger part, synthesizers and music computer systems were getting cheaper and allowed musicians and producers to experiment with innovating ways of musical expression. Although the influence of electronic instruments was already immense at that time, early '80s Disco/Funk music still retained the warmth and charm of artists really playing the instruments. That was the period in which musicians still took the lead in actually embroidering music, as opposed to fully programming it.
It was also an amazingly productive era for R&B music in general. It wasn't unusual that hot R&B acts cut two albums in the same year as did the Whispers, Fatback, Ozone, Skyy, Gene Dunlap, The Detroit Spinners, Starpoint, Richard 'Dimples' Fields, The Dazz Band, Bill Summers, Con Funk Shun, One Way, The Isley Brothers, Lakeside or Cameo. The abundance of quality output during this time was to a large extent the merit of a new generation of producers/songwriters who would mark the '80s and even the '90s sometimes. They helped constructing the matrix of sophisticated Soul, a formula whereby Soulmusic could be massive on the dancefloor while still maintaining the highest standards of composition and musicianship.

The dawn of '80s R&B was clear when Michael Jackson's Off The Wall peaked the black album charts during the whole of 1980. It was the perfect record to introduce the post-Disco era with an impeccable production, brilliant songs, tasteful arrangements and a captivating artist to truly give them life. The man behind this project was the legendary producer Quincy Jones who proved pivotal in connecting post-Disco to the present. But he wasn't the only figure who redefined the sound of Disco/Dance and R&B. A bunch of young, busy studiocats who surfaced in the late '70s also contributed to the new outline of Black Dance Music. The likes of Randy Muller, Dexter Wansel, Nick Martinelli, Kashif or the partnership James Mtume/Reggie Lucas employed an efficient synthesis of Soul, Funk and Disco, new recording technologies and synthesized instrumentation on top of a strong musical foundation. Remember the luminous work of writer and producer Leon F. Sylvers III. His fusion of guitar, strings, tight harmonies, infectious melodies, funky bass lines, handclaps and a smattering of synthesised sparkle created the fresh Solar sound.
Some long-established producers as Michael Stokes, Arif Mardin or Allen A. Jones, who all started their careers back in the deep seventies, stayed in the game. They distinguished themselves by the soundness of their '80s output and the bright adaptation of their production patterns to a contemporary standard.
Whereas most of the instrumentation on the earlier productions was live and authentic, drum programming, synthesizer arrangements, sequencing and overdubs entered the picture in the '80s, and certainly in a big way around the mid '80s. Soulmusic became increasingly keyboard-based and computerized. Not everyone was keen on this electronic and digital turnabout but the application of revolutionary music technology was an inevitable phase on the way to the the R&B music of the next generation.

Before focusing on the 'Producer facts in short' and the 'Producer discographies' it's important to know what a record producer really is. Most people imagine that this is the musicbiz equivalent of a film producer, a person who finances projects and invests in upcoming artists with the ultimate motivation of generating money. This perception is wrong because the word 'record producer' is a misleading term that can be confused with the function of an 'executive producer'. The word 'record director' would be far more accurate. The record producer has three simultaneous functions. He's a director, a consultant and a catalyst. To know when to switch from one role to another becomes the record producer's primary goal in the studio. Some artists will require far more of one aspect than another, but the producer should always be ready to give enough creative space to let the unexpected happen. His challenge is to bring out the best in an artist and to improve the chance to have a successful if not an outstanding product. Therefore he can often rely on a team of trusty collaborators like musicians, songwriters, vocalists, arrangers and engineers who make up the keystones of a characteristic production sound. Complementary to their role of studio captains, producers are often qualified musicians, arrangers, songwriters (e.g. Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis, Nile Rodgers/Bernard Edwards) or even artists themselves (e.g. Prince, Narada Michael Walden, Ray Parker Jr.).
The creative control enables the producer to develop a personal style that eventually becomes his trademark sound. Black music has always played a major role in the field of commercial dance music. Because this type of music is still regarded as a producer's medium par excellence it is quite common that the artist's position is inferior to the production concept. Also during the '80s the actual artists were often an instrument of the producer's creativity. The success of Solar Records was mainly based on the production and songwriting wizardry of one influential musician: Leon Frank Sylvers III. Leon Sylvers and a tight knit crew of Solar associated musicians and writers effortlessly provided quality music for a stable of seemingly interchangeable labelmates. They were the vehicles of the glorious Solar sound. Morrie Brown's company Mighty M Productions, that at a certain time comprised the triumvirate of Kashif, Paul Lawrence Jones III (a.k.a. Paul Laurence) and Brown himself, developed a ground-breaking sound that played a significant role in the careers of Howard Johnson, Lillo Thomas, Kashif, Evelyn King and Melba Moore as well as in the evolution of urban electronic contemporary music in general. The fact that a recognizable production style was shared by different artists wasn't necessarily a minus as long as the artists benefited from an inspiring collaboration with skilled top producers who had a clear vision.
Self-contained R&B bands and autonomous black acts beyond compare such as One Way, Prince, The Isley Brothers, Zapp, Maze or Earth Wind & Fire followed a more personal course. The evolution of their unique styles was an inner process of natural renewal subtly influenced by the trends in the world of black music.
The achievements of all these remarkable sonic architects gave R&B music a new zest, lifting it up to a higher level of sophistication and enjoyment. The '80s R&B producer's craft was individual, private and behind the scenes. An obscure control room job virtually unknown to the general public. Their under-appreciated contribution to the development of black music was so substantial that they deserve an introduction. All to be discovered in the following digest that brings the merits of the often unsung '80s heroes of the black recording industry into the limelight...

Reggie Calloway & Vincent Calloway

Producer facts in short:

Reggie (Reginald) and Vincent Calloway have worked in the music industry as songwriters, producers and recording artists since the early '80s. The Calloway brothers were the nucleus of the techno-funk band Midnight Star, founded at Kentucky State University in 1976. In 1980 they secured a deal with Dick Griffey's Solar label where in-house producer Leon Sylvers III took full control of Midnight Star's second Standing Together set. In between the recording sessions of Standing Together Leon Sylvers had touring obligations in Africa with his band Dynasty. So the Calloway brothers were given a break to explore their skills as producers on the songmaterial for their second long player. The sessions were so satisfactory that Reggie and Vincent Calloway progressed to producer for the next Midnight Star albums. The influence of Leon Sylvers in their work, particularly on their No Parking On The Dance Floor album, was obvious. Together with the bandmembers they created timeless hits such as "Freak-A-Zoid" (1983), "Wet My Whistle" (1983), "Operator" (1984), "Curious" (1984), "Headlines" (1986) and "Midas Touch" (1986). Everything clicked, from the production and arrangements to the hook-filled lyrics and exuberant vocals. The chart success of Midnight Star was credited to the distinctive production approach of Reggie and Vincent. During this time they also wrote and produced for Solar associated artists such as Klymaxx ("The Men All Pause"), the Whispers ("Contagious") and The Deele ("Body Talk"). After leaving Midnight Star in 1986, they formed Calloco Productions and wrote/produced the hits "Love Overboard" for Gladys Knight & The Pips, "Joy" for Teddy Pendergrass, "Jump Start" for Natalie Cole and "Casanova" for Levert. In 1990, Reggie and Vincent hit the stage again as the duo Calloway. Calloway had a gold smash in 1989 with "I Wanna Be Rich" and issued two Solar albums: All The Way (1990) and Let's Get Smooth (1992). The brothers continued working with Pieces Of A Dream, Teddy Pendergrass, Bootsy Collins, NSYNC and Sugar Ray. Reggie released his solo debut album Walking Between Raindrops on Calloway Records in 2003.

Producer facts in short:

Brazilian Eumir Deodato worked as a session musician in Rio before emigrating to California in 1967 where he quickly established himself as a musical arranger. He has worked with artists such as Roberta Flack, Frank Sinatra, Bette Midler, Aretha Franklin, Earth Wind & Fire, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto and Stanley Turrentine. As a solo artist with a jazzy approach he signed successfully to the New York-based CTI Records (hit: "Also Sprach Zarathustra") and later got a deal with MCA. A subsequent move to Warner Bros. revived his career with the electrifying "Whistle Bump" (1978) and "Night Cruiser" (1980). In 1979 Eumir Deodato went disco/soul and embarked on a highly successful producer career, revitalizing the fortunes of funkband Kool & The Gang. He refined the qualities already inherent in the group's eclectic style and together they achieved a series of highly successful international hits including "Ladies Night" (1979), "Too Hot" (1980), "Celebration" (1980), "Get Down On It" (1981) and "Let s Go Dancing (Oh La La La)" (1982). He utilized this same successful formula on his own album Happy Hour and Juicy's self-titled debut album, both released in 1982. In 1983 Deodato offered his services to ConFunkShun, another hot funk act on the Mercury label, and produced their Fever set which showed an interesting transitional production sound. His following solo project Motion in 1984 and further collaborations with Kleeer, Juicy and One Way had Deodato moving heavily into the realm of '80s soul, using a bit more of an electro feel overall, often including work on Prophet, Linn drums and DMX, next to the more traditional instrumentation. Eumir Deodato switched to the Atlantic label in 1989 for his last album to date. In the '90s Deodato continued to be a vital force in the pop scene, working with Icelandic singer Björk and several Brazilian artists.

Barry Eastmond

Barry J. Eastmond is a classically trained musician. He initially worked as an arranger on the Philly music scene doing rhythm arrangements for artists including the O'Jays. In the early '80s he got a gig with Melba Moore as musical director and keyboard player and went on the road with her. After Melba Moore came Chaka Khan and Angela Bofill. When he grew tired of touring he decided to settle in his vibrant hometown of New York. His goal was to be a complete musician and that's what he did: playing keyboards in Broadway shows (Cats), composing tunes and jingles, writing songs, doing live gigs and session work. Inevitably though, one aspect began to overshadow the rest. In 1984 he worked with producer Keith Diamond on Billy Ocean's Suddenly album in every way (hit: "Caribbean Queen"). When Billy Ocean and Keith Diamond had some kind of falling out, Eastmond was asked to do the next record. With the help of his friend Wayne Brathwaite he wrote and produced a slew of hits for Billy Ocean. The previous years he had already produced outstanding releases by Lillo Thomas and Freddie Jackson. Since, Barry Easmond has become one of the most prolific pop and R&B songwriter/producers, having over seventy gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums on some of the most important contemporary artists. Barry's creative magic has been responsible for R&B hit records by Anita Baker, Brandy, Aretha Franklin, Tamia, Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Keith Washington, Whitney Houston, Al Jarreau, Dionne Warwick, Temptations, Phil Perry, Will Downing, Vanessa Williams, Jonathan Butler, Regina Belle, Barry White, Al Jarreau and George Benson, to name just a few. Barry has not limited his composing to the record industry. He has written numerous songs for films and TV. As if that were not enough, Barry has received numerous A.S.C.A.P. Pop and R&B awards.

Producer facts in short:

Singer/guitarplayer Mic (Michael) Murphy and keyboardist David Frank met while touring with the funk band Kleeer in 1981. Together they formed their own group The System and set up the company Science Lab Productions. Frank invested in the emerging MIDI/synth music technology. Through these revolutionary synchronized instruments, he created a one-man electronic rhythm section and helped laying the foundation for contemporary electronic popular music. Before The System became a top act, Frank and Murphy recorded the Slave-like single "Much Too Much" in 1982 under the name Sass. The first System single "It's Passion" generated major interest. They were subsequently signed to the Mirage/Atlantic label and the debut album Sweat was released in 1983 (hit: "You Are In My System"). Their innovative approach put The System in high demand as producers, songwriters and musicians. The group embarked on a number of writing and/or production projects for other artists including Howard Johnson and Attitude. As The System they hit the black charts again with "I Wanna Make You Feel Good" (1984) and "This Is For You" (1985). In the meantime the duo continued to work as musicians and/or producers for Jeff Lorber ("Step By Step"), Chaka Khan ("I Feel For You"), Phil Collins ("Sussudio"), Mtume ("Juicy Fruit"), Evelyn King, Steve Winwood ("Higher Love"), Scritti Politti ("Absolute"), Aztec Camera and Pauli Carman. They also contributed to the movie soundtracks for two Eddie Murphy blockbusters: Beverly Hills Cop and Coming To America. 1987 was a great year for The System, giving them their biggest R&B and pop hit: "Don't Disturb This Groove". Even though it seemed that everyone wanted to work with The System, the pair decided not to spread themselves too thin and turned down a lot of offers. At the end of the '80s, Mic Murphy and David Frank parted ways. Frank went on to work with artists like Michael McDonald, Phoebe Snow, Masters At Work, 98 Degrees, Sheena Easton, Christina Aguilera, Omar, Dionne Farris, Wild Orchid, Eternal and Rebbie Jackson. During early 1991, Mic Murphy released his solo album Touch (Fit to Be Tied) which had a lot of System overtones. In 2000 the The System reunited for their album ESP.

Producer facts in short:

Kenneth Gold is actually British, but when he signed his first publishing deal in 1971, it was only in the U.S. that he was able to place his work. The problem was that Ken Gold was into Soul and there wasn't any room for Soul music in the British record industry at that time. He got his songs recorded by the likes of Aretha Franklin, Jackie Wilson, Eugene Record and Jackie Moore over in the States - which gives some indication of just how good he was - and couldn't get a hearing in Britain. That changed when he got to know Tony Hall, the veteran hero of British popular music who was then managing soul act The Real Thing. Back in the U.K. in 1976 he got success with songwriting and production work for The Real Thing with whom he continued to work over the next couple of years (hits: "You To Me Are Everything", "Can You Feel The Force"). Gold became one of the innovators amongst British producers of black music. The quality of his productions was at least the equal of anything emerging Stateside at the time. Along with his solid writing partner Micky Denne he also took care of the career of Delegation through the late '70s and early '80s (hits: "Oh Honey", "Where Is The Love (We Used To Know)", "You And I", "Put A Little Love On Me"). Delegation's classic album Eau De Vie from 1979 can be considered as Gold's ultimate signature work as a Disco-Funk producer and songwriter. Ken Gold and Micky Denne appeared as artists on their one album Denne & Gold, released in 1978. Gold furthermore wrote for the Pointer Sisters' Black & White album in 1981 and teamed up with Billy Ocean for his 1980 and 1981 albums (hits: "Stay The Night", "Are You Ready"). In 1988 he relocated to the States where he had cuts with Randy Crawford, Teddy Pendergrass (album Truly Blessed, 1991), Carl Anderson (album Fantasy Hotel, 1992), Anthony T. Gibson (album Complete, 1993) and Smokey Robinson (album Love, Smokey, 1990). Gold also wrote and produced three new songs on the last Delegation album Encore released in 1996. Besides composing soulmusic Ken Gold also wrote fine pop tunes for Cliff Richard (album I'm Nearly Famous, 1976). He even toured with Cliff Richard and Elton John as a backing vocalist and produced material for the pop group The Scene in 1980.

Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen met during the '60s while attending the Manhattan School of Music and Art. They later worked together on the Andy Williams Show and collaborated on a series of Jon Lucien albums during the first half of the '70s. In 1976 they formed the production company GRP and introduced artists as Patti Austin, Noel Pointer, Earl Klugh and Lee Ritenour. Through Grusin/Rosen Productions they were helping to redefine sophisticated contemporary jazz for a whole new generation. Their production association soon led to the creation of their own GRP label via Arista in 1978. For GRP Records they developed new jazz-fusion and R&B talent, including Tom Browne (hit: "Funkin' For Jamaica"), Don Blackman, Jay Hoggard, Dave Valentin and Angela Bofill. Along with young prodigious musicians like Bernard Wright, Marcus Miller and Bobby Broom they created an incredibly crisp and clean jazz-funk sound. Grusin and Rosen also were pioneers in digital recording. The Dave Grusin album Mountain Dance, produced in 1979, was the first digitally recorded non-classical album. Their visionary strategy, combining world-class artistry with state-of-the-art recording technology aimed at the sophisticated adult consumer, enabled them to build the most successful contemporary jazz and fusion label in the world. In 1990 GRP was sold to MCA (Universal Music Group). Larry Rosen stayed at GRP as president and CEO until 1995. Today he owns a company involved in e-commerce consulting. Co-founder Dave Grusin is still active as performer, producer, (soundtrack-)composer and arranger on the GRP label.

Producer facts in short:

Born in Camden, New Jersey, Norman 'Butch' Ingram is the spearhead of the Ingram family group and began his music career after giving up basketball due to an injury. Butch taught himself the bass, acquired some recording equipment and put his musical family to work on their first album The Funk Is In Our Music in 1976. They signed to H&L the following year for their second album That's All ("Mi Sabrina Tequana"). H&L went out of business, but the name Ingram was tied up contractually for two years, preventing the group from using it. Butch started producing Philly artists on the WMOT/Fantasy label, including Slick, Damon Harris, David Simmons and Philly Cream. The Ingrams together with the musicians of Fat Larry's Band actually became the session group Philly Cream after the original Ohio band split up before their album was finished. For two years the Ingrams recorded as Philly Cream and had an American hit with "Motown Review" in 1979. The Ingram family also acted as the multi-talented studiogroup that backed up Butch Ingram's Family Productions. In 1983, the Ingrams recorded as Ingram again on the Mirage label, releasing Would You Like To Fly, including "Smoothin' Groovin'" and "DJ's Delight". Their follow-up was Night Stalkers in 1984 including "I Like It" and "Groovin' On A Groove". In addition to producing Ingram, Butch continued to work as a writer/producer with numerous other Philadelphia-based artists like Barbara Mason (hits: "Another Man", "Don't I Ever Cross Your Mind"), Ronnie Dyson ("All Over Your Face"), Julius Brown, The Sigma Sweethearts, Major Harris, Roz Ryan, Brandi Wells, The Stylistics, Blue Magic, Vera Brown and Michelle Gold. Around 1983 he started up the record label Society Hill and instigated new talent. In the '90s he appeared on albums by Rene Goodwin, King Eddie, Edmond Daniels and Maria Hernandez.

Producer facts:

New York-based producer and industry executive Lionel Job has produced/arranged throughout the '70s, '80s and '90s for artists like Cliff Dawson, Marz, Audrey Wheeler, Keith Sweat and Joe Public. A remarkable career that made him bridge successfully three decades of Black music, going from Disco-Funk to New Jack Swing. His first project goes back to 1977 when he masterminded and produced the studio group Southroad Connection. Their funky tune "Just Laying It Down" is regarded as one of the finest Disco records of all time. Lionel Job also played an integral role in the group Starpoint, producing all their hit records.

Allen A. Jones is best known as longtime mentor, devotee, producer and manager of funkband the Bar-Kays. He started his career in Memphis back in the sixties as an in-house producer and songwriter at Stax records. There he worked with many legendary Stax artists like The Mar-Keys, Margie Joseph, Otis Redding, Albert King, Johnnie Taylor, The Mad Lads, Isaac Hayes and protégés the Bar-Kays. He was the man who connected the 'Kays' with the pulse of the street, who provided an essential pair of ears and who kept everybody loose. His approach was very analytical and adaptibility was the magic formula that secured the longevity of his groups. He would create an album exactly based on the kind of grooves that were in vogue at the time of recording, without losing the basic funk. In the '80s he also produced the black acts Kwick, Carl Carlton, Ebonee Webb and Chocolate Milk. Their 'naked funk' musicstyles were quite similar: muscular synth-grooves that combined the slamming nasty funk of the '70s with the techno-charged vibes of the '80s. Allen A. Jones died of a heart attack in 1987.

The brilliant keyboardist Kashif was born Michael Jones in 1959 in Brooklyn, N.Y., but later changed his name to Kashif Saleem when he adopted the Islamic faith. Kashif began his professional career at the age of 16 as member of the funkband B.T. Express in 1976. He remained there for 3 years. Afterwards he worked as a session musician for a while. In the early '80s he joined Morrie Brown's production house Mighty M Productions together with his friend keyboard player Paul Lawrence Jones III (now Paul Laurence). During 1981 and 1982 the Mighty M triumvirate successfully wrote and produced for Howard Johnson, Evelyn King and Melba Moore. Within the Mighty M team Kashif developed a complete new music style that revolutionized R&B music through the infusion of the MIDI/synth technology, creating a whole new approach to production with vocalists. The fresh synth-based sound appeared for the first time on Evelyn King's debut album I'm In Love in 1981. The title track became one of the first all-synthesized R&B/pop hits and marked the birth of the one-man-band producers. In 1983 he left the Mighty M collective and went on to fame and fortune as a solo artist. While signed with Arista, Kashif started using the Synclavier to create unique blends of synthesized and live music. With hit records like "I Just Got To Have You (Lover Turn Me On)" and "Stone Love" Kashif began creating a solid reputation for his distinctive pioneering musical sound that formed the base of urban contemporary soul music. He started up the production company New Music Group and became a very in-demand producer/songwriter who can be heard on releases by George Benson, Kenny G, Melba Moore, Whitney Houston and Meli'sa Morgan. In 1990 Kashif took a break from recording, devoting his time to other ways of self-expression like software development, conducting seminars about contemporary record production and writing a book on the music industry. He also started up the L.A. based Brooklyn Boy company. He's still recording sporadically nowadays but admits that music is and always will be his first love.

The Bell brothers and their relations who joined Kool & The Gang were given the Muslim name Bayyan when they became adherents of the Nation of Islam in 1972. Kool & The Gang's musical success influenced new talent right in their own family. Multi-instrumentalist Amir Abdul-Salaam Bayyan, a.k.a. Kevin Bell, is the younger brother of Robert "Kool" Bell (a.k.a. Muhammad Bayyan) and Ronald "The Captain" Bell (a.k.a. Khalis Bayyan) who formed Kool & The Gang. Prior to becoming a freelance musician, producer and songwriter Amir Bayyan sang and played with Kool & The Gang and The Kay-Gees. In 1981 Amir started up the production company Bayyan Internationale together with his first cousin Royal Bayyan and a little later formed his own group Forecast along with Royal Bayyan and Adil Bayyan, another first cousin (a.k.a. Royal Jackson). Adil Bayyan formerly was the Road Manager of Kool & The Gang and Royal Bayyan played guitar with the Gang. Forecast also introduced female singer Armenta Richardson (a.k.a. Armenta Bayyan) who would record a couple of solo singles as Armenta later on. Adil Bayyan, Khalis Bayyan - Kool & The Gang's musical genius - and Royal Bayyan often collaborated with Amir Bayyan on many projects like Candela, Jimmy Cliff (hit: "Reggae Night"), Kool & The Gang, Forecast (hit: "Happy Days (Hip Hip Hooray)"), Armenta, Latoya Jackson, Atlantis, Conquest, Majik and Tomorrow's Edition.
